Star Wars: The Old Republic

Occasionally I get a sudden urge to play an MMORPG. I've only ever really played two of them: The Lord of the Rings Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Well, now I'm back in a galaxy far, far away, and I'm keeping track of how I spend my time there.

I renewed my subscription to Star Wars about a week and a half ago. It's a free-to-play MMORPG nowadays, but there are several restrictions in place for F2P players, so I just throw Bioware some money so I don't have to deal with it.

As far as I'm concerned, the most restrictive part of F2P life is the limit on the number of crafting skills I can have for each character. I am a crafter. It's what I do. So, for me it's got to be subscription or nothing at all.

When I say I'm a crafter, what I mean is that I generally focus on crafting to the exclusion of all else when playing MMOs. Everyone absolutely must have the best gear, and I'll guarantee that this happens even if I have to spend hours farming materials to do it. So, I have eight characters, five of which have unique crafting abilities to arm their fellows.

That said, today is probably the first day since I resubscribed that I'd say I've actually been progressing in the game. Before that I had to take stock of what crafting I need to do, then I assigned each character a list of tasks to complete before I could continue the game. I finally finished all of my crafting duties late last night.

It's nice to know that my characters are all set to progress through level 20 now, but soon enough the process will begin all over again as I start crafting stuff for level 25 or 30.

Suffice to say, I generally don't play MMORPGs for very long. It's a mood thing, I think. For whatever reason, I just start getting this itch to play this sort of game for a while at the beginning of the year. Soon, though, my two month subscription will run out, and I'll probably say goodbye to Jedis and smugglers until next year.

In any case, I've put in several hours of play today, which I think is enough. Time to go do something else.
