D&D Session #40: Tit for Tats

Whew! The past few weeks have seen one thing after another get in the way of having D&D sessions, but this week we pulled it together and continued our journey.

The party had followed the light of a star to a new land, oddly enough. The new land looked much like the place they'd left from, except for the huge city with the blinding, bright light beaming out of the top of it.

After attempting once again to negotiate a better deal for checking out the city on the hill (they're getting at least one additional tattoo for this mission), the party led their group of humans, elves, and their friend Helvetica up to the gates of the city. Unfortunately, the gates were closed and would not open, and there was no sign of a keyhole.

The gates were covered in runes, however--Ma'ari runes.

After knocking, yelling, and verifying that the gates were, in fact, corporeal, Helvetica suggested that usually, when he goes out, he leaves the key under the mat.

Sure enough, though there was no welcome mat to be found, there was another path leading to a cave in the side of the mountain. The party decided to check it out, while Helvetica and the civilians decided to keep an eye on the door.

The elven warrior Akito decided to stay with the rest of them, while a dangerous-looking half-elf volunteered to go along in Akito's place.

The cave was marked by a sign outside which resembled the Ma'ari runes for "AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY," which the party remembered from the "Hall of Judgment" from their own world, beneath the huge, mechanical monstrosity known as the Gearbox.

After going a short ways inside the cave, the party encountered a couple of traps and decided to leave and seek guidance from Kirtan.

Kirtan had little advice to give, however. He needed to stay with the ship in case the city was, indeed, inhabited by Ma'ari--he'd need to flee, even if that meant leaving the party stranded.

Buck in particular took issue with this, but eventually the party returned to the cave.

The cave turned out to be a maze, filled with all sorts of traps including rolling rocks, swinging pendulums, and at least one room that sealed itself and began filling with water.

Some of these traps were bypassed through careful search by the entire party, though many turned out to be too difficult to find, especially since Tyriron hadn't focused on his Search skill much. Still, through creative use of items, spells, and summoned monsters, the party managed to render most of the traps ineffective.

They sent a summoned dretch into a room with writing on the wall. A magical snake lunged for the dretch when he approached the wall, but he managed to dodge it and read the writing:

A HIDDEN PASSAGE, YOU HAVE MISSED
THE CITADEL AWAITS ABOVE
I'LL HELP IF YOU CAN FIND ME
LEFT, THEN RIGHT TO REACH THE HUB

What is the hub? Is this the citadel the titans were searching for? Who wrote this message?

Perhaps this chapter will finally come to an end next session.
